Prof. Ngô Bảo Châu

A native of Hanoi, North Vietnam, Ngô Bảo Châu has made decisive advances in modern mathematics
on the frontier of number theory and representation theory. His contribution is the proof of the
fundamental lemma of the Langlands Program, which had vexed mathematicians for three decades.
Time magazine listed this work as one of the top 10 scientific discoveries of 2009. Ngô’s honors include
the the 2010 Fields Medal, Oberwolfach Prize, Prix Sophie Germain de l’Académie des Sciences de Paris
and Clay Research Award. He also has delivered invited addresses to the International Congress of
Mathematicians in 2006 and 2010. As a high–school student in 1988 and 1989 he received gold medals
at the International Mathematical Olympiad. It is a great honor for VEFFA to have Dr. Ngô as a member of our BoA for the term 2011.
