By car, Austin is 1.5 hours from San Antonio, 1.5 hours from Bryan - College Station, 3 hours from Houston, 3.5 hours from Dallas and 4 hours from Corpus Christi. Texans are big fans of cars, especially trucks of all sorts. So it's no surprise to find that the most convenient way to travel back and forth between major cities in Texas is to drive. If you're a visitor to Austin, rent a decent car, grasp a few country music CD's, get some warm company and you're ready for a wonderful road trip through the country of Texas. If you go by plane from Houston to Austin, it takes less than 40 minutes from take off to landing. Roundtrip airfare can run anywhere from $150 to a few hundred bucks depending on your luck with the travel agent. Between Christmas and New Year is the busiest season to travel anywhere within the States, so you might expect the fare to be quite crazy. Austin Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) is located 15 minutes by car from downtown Austin. There is also a bus (bus number 100) that runs almost every hour taking you through downtown to the University of Texas at Austin. A cheap alternative is always Greyhound buses that run daily to Austin from major cities in Texas. Roundtrip ticket to Austin from Houston is around $40 each, and the trip takes around 3.5-4 hours. Austin has a public bus system that runs through the post populous suburbs of the city. These buses, however, only operate within a diameter of 10-15 miles from downtown. Fares are 50c per trip or $1.0 for a day-pass. You can get more information online at www.capmetro.org. |
